CASIMIR EFFECT

TWO CONDUCTING PLATES having area A, ELECTRICALLY NEUTRAL, placed opposite each other in a vacuum at a distance d

ATTRACT

with a force given by:

formula Casimir

Although this phenomenon may seem contrary to common sense of classical physics, it is well explained by quantum physics in terms of the pressure exerted on the plates by the fluctuating electromagnetic fields filling the "vacuum".
