Workshop on Cross-Scale Coupling in Plasmas
Multi-scale Coupling
Collisionless plasmas abound in space, astrophysical, and laboratory
environments. The physical processes responsible for mass, momentum,
and energy transport and exchange must couple different scale regimes,
from the smallest electron scales, through ion scales to the
macroscopic fluid-like phenomena. Observations show that this coupling
in the dominant processes (shocks, magnetic reconnection, and
turbulence) are dynamic and therefore the feedback mechanisms need to
be considered, and measured, simultaneously on all scales. This
session will introduce these concepts and provide a forum for
contributions highlighting this multi-scale coupling in terms of
present understanding and ignorance.
